Bradesco announced on 15 November 2024 that its investment banking arm, Bradesco BBI, had achieved its BRL 250 billion sustainable finance mobilisation target ahead of the 2025 deadline originally attached to the programme. The early completion of the goal established Bradesco as a leading institution in Latin American sustainable finance and prompted the bank to set a higher ambition without delay, raising the target to BRL 320 billion over the same 2025 time horizon.

The achievement underlined the pace at which green and sustainability-linked financing has grown in the Brazilian capital markets. Bradesco BBI built its tally through a combination of debt capital markets transactions, including green bonds and sustainability-linked instruments, structured finance deals, and project financings in sectors aligned with environmental and social objectives. The bank's role as an active bookrunner and arranger across these categories gave it a diversified pipeline of eligible transactions that collectively enabled the BRL 250 billion threshold to be reached ahead of schedule.

KEY TRANSACTIONS ANCHOR THE MILESTONE

Among the transactions contributing to Bradesco BBI's sustainable finance total was its role as active bookrunner on green bonds issued by Raízen, one of Brazil's largest producers of renewable energy and sugarcane-based ethanol, and on debentures for Scala Data Centers, which aligned its infrastructure financing with sustainability criteria applicable to digital infrastructure. These deals illustrated the breadth of the bank's sustainable finance coverage across sectors where ESG-linked capital markets activity has matured in Brazil, spanning clean energy, biofuels, and the data centre industry.

Bradesco has positioned itself as a first mover on climate commitments within Brazil's financial sector. The bank publicly committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its own operations and financed activities by 2050, becoming the first major Brazilian financial institution to set that target. That net-zero pledge provides the strategic context for Bradesco BBI's sustainable finance mobilisation programme, which management has framed as the financing arm of the bank's broader climate and sustainability strategy.

NEW TARGET RAISES THE BAR IMMEDIATELY

The decision to lift the target from BRL 250 billion to BRL 320 billion, announced simultaneously with confirmation that the original goal had been met, signalled management's confidence that pipeline activity in sustainable finance remained robust and that demand for ESG-structured products would continue to expand across the Latin American market. The additional BRL 70 billion would need to be mobilised within the same 2025 window, compressing the time available relative to the effort required to reach the first threshold.

The announcement came at a moment of increasing scrutiny of sustainable finance commitments across the Latin American banking sector. Investors and regulators have been paying closer attention to the substance and measurability of ESG pledges, with questions raised in multiple markets about the rigour of frameworks used to classify transactions as sustainable. Bradesco's early achievement of a numerically defined, publicly stated target was viewed as a concrete demonstration of delivery on its commitments rather than a purely aspirational statement. The bank said it would continue to report progress towards the BRL 320 billion goal through its regular sustainability and investor communications. The bank expressed confidence that the revised goal remained achievable within the existing deal pipeline and its established sustainable finance origination capabilities.
