National Bank of Canada reported third-quarter 2026 diluted earnings per share of C$3.39, up 26% year on year, alongside net income of C$1,307 million and revenue of C$4.05 billion, according to the Montreal-based lender's quarterly release.

Return on equity for the quarter stood at 16.8%, and management said the bank was on track to exceed its fiscal 2026 return on equity target of 16%, underlining a period of strong operating performance across the franchise.

DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH ACROSS THE BOARD

Revenue of C$4.05 billion for the third quarter marked an increase of 18% on the prior-year period, one of the strongest top-line prints among Canada's large banks in the current reporting cycle. Net income of C$1,307 million represented year-on-year growth of 23%, while diluted EPS growth of 26% outpaced both figures, reflecting the benefit of share count discipline.

The bank's results have been buoyed by its expanded footprint following the completion of its combination with Canadian Western Bank, which broadened National Bank's presence beyond its traditional Quebec base and gave it a meaningful commercial banking platform in Western Canada. Management has previously flagged the deal as a driver of both revenue growth and geographic diversification.

Alongside the personal and commercial banking franchise, National Bank operates a wealth management arm, a capital markets business and specialist financial services that together contributed to the broad-based earnings expansion delivered during the quarter.

ROE ON TRACK TO EXCEED 16% TARGET

The reported return on equity of 16.8% for the third quarter comfortably clears the 16% level that management had set as a fiscal-year benchmark. The bank said in its results release that it was on track to exceed the 16% fiscal 2026 target, reinforcing its position as one of the more profitable large banks in the Canadian sector.

That profitability run rate has helped support National Bank's premium valuation among peers, with investors historically willing to pay up for the group's higher-return profile and disciplined credit performance. The current quarter's numbers point to a continuation of that pattern rather than a departure from it.

Diluted EPS of C$3.39 represents a step up from the corresponding quarter of the prior fiscal year and reflects the combined effect of revenue growth, operating leverage and the enlarged earnings base following the Canadian Western integration.

The third-quarter figures cover the three months to 31 July 2026 and take National Bank into the final quarter of its fiscal year, which ends on 31 October. With the ROE target already on course to be exceeded, attention among investors and analysts will shift to how the bank chooses to deploy the resulting capital generation.

Management said the third-quarter performance reflected contributions from across the group's businesses and the benefits of its expanded platform. The bank is scheduled to provide fuller commentary on segment trends and forward-looking priorities in its accompanying investor presentation and conference call with analysts.

Taken together, 26% growth in diluted EPS, 23% growth in net income and 18% growth in revenue place National Bank of Canada towards the top of the Canadian banking peer group by rate of expansion in the third quarter, with a 16.8% return on equity that management has flagged as running ahead of its stated 16% fiscal 2026 profitability benchmark.
