Absa Bank Limited listed two new green bonds on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange's Sustainability Segment on 8 August 2025, raising a combined ZAR 2.9 billion, according to the notes' pricing supplements. The instruments, designated ABGN07 and ABGN08, were issued under Absa's Domestic Medium Term Note Programme, which carries a total authorised issuance size of ZAR 90 billion.
ABGN07 raised ZAR 1.162 billion through a three-year floating-rate note priced at JIBAR plus 83 basis points, while ABGN08 raised ZAR 1.761 billion through a five-year instrument at JIBAR plus 100 basis points. JIBAR is the Johannesburg Interbank Average Rate.
SUSTAINABILITY SEGMENT LISTING
Listing on the JSE Sustainability Segment provides the bonds with formal recognition as instruments that meet defined standards for green use of proceeds. The segment was established to give issuers a dedicated listing venue for labelled bonds and to make it easier for investors with sustainability mandates to identify and access qualifying instruments within the South African capital market.
The pricing supplements state that net proceeds will fund or refinance, on a portfolio basis, renewable energy assets such as solar and wind projects, under the 'Renewable energy' category of Absa Group's Sustainable Finance Issuance Framework.
