BBVA channelled €120 billion into sustainable business between January and September 2026, up 27% on the same period last year, the bank said. About €38 billion of the total came from Spain.
The nine-month figure takes the amount BBVA has channelled since 2025 to €254 billion, more than 36% of its €700 billion target for 2025 to 2029. Of that cumulative total, €195 billion, or 77%, went to environmental activities covering climate change and natural capital, and €59 billion, or 23%, to social initiatives.
COMMERCIAL BANKING GROWS FASTEST
Wholesale clients in corporate and investment banking accounted for about €60 billion in the nine months, 16% more than a year earlier. Commercial banking channelled around €45 billion, a 40% increase, with particularly strong growth in Mexico and Türkiye.
Retail clients added about €14 billion, up 38%, of which around €10 billion went to social initiatives and €5 billion to environmental activities. By product, financing and transactional banking made up 86% of the total, capital markets 10% and project finance four per cent.
By country, Spain led with 32% of the volume, followed by Mexico with 16%, Türkiye with 13% and South America with 10%, the bank said.
A BIGGER TARGET OVER A SHORTER PERIOD
The €700 billion goal more than doubles BBVA's previous target of €300 billion between 2018 and 2025, which the bank reached in December 2024, a year ahead of schedule. The new target also covers five years rather than eight.
BBVA is one of the three groups that dominate Spain's concentrated banking system, alongside Santander and CaixaBank, and with Santander runs a large international franchise, according to TGB's market profile. It has reported net attributable profit of €9.07 billion for the first nine months, up 13.6%, with lending up 20.4% in constant euros and a return on tangible equity of 22%.
