BBVA published its Green and Social Bond Report for 2024 in August 2025, disclosing that the Spanish bank had allocated a total of EUR 5.83 billion of green bond proceeds to eligible green projects as of December 2024, a 20% increase on the prior year's total, alongside EUR 1 billion from its social bond directed to 52,154 microenterprises in Spain, the bank said on its website. The report also estimated that the projects financed avoided approximately 1.94 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent through the activities it financed.
The report also restated BBVA's target, set in February 2025, of channelling EUR 700 billion into sustainable business between 2025 and 2029, which replaced its previous multi-year objective. The figure encompasses a broad range of products and transactions across BBVA's global operations that meet its internal classification criteria for sustainable finance.
GREEN ALLOCATION RISES 20%
BBVA's green bond allocation covers qualifying assets in markets including the US, Spain, Italy, the UK, China, Chile and Canada.
The same report disclosed that the EUR 1 billion from its social bond was directed to 52,154 microenterprises in Spain.
The 1.94 million tonnes of carbon dioxide avoided is derived from the bank's assessment of the emissions reductions generated by the renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean transport projects financed through its green bond proceeds. The figure is 50% higher than in the previous report.
EUR 700 BILLION TARGET FOR 2025–2029
The target covers mobilisation of capital across BBVA's full range of business lines, including corporate banking, retail mortgages, and investment banking activities across its home market of Spain and its major international operations.
BBVA operates across Spain, Mexico, Turkey, and several other markets.
