The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has announced leadership changes that take effect next year. President and CEO Jose Teodoro “TG” Limcaoco will move to senior roles in other Ayala Group companies by April 2027. Maria Cristina “Ginbee” Go, currently executive vice president and head of consumer banking, will succeed him on 26 April 2027, following the bank’s annual stockholders’ meeting and subject to necessary approvals.

Go will be the first female president and CEO of BPI, the country’s oldest bank. On becoming CEO she will join the Ayala Group Management Committee. Limcaoco will remain a member of the BPI Board of Directors and take on senior governance roles in other Ayala Group companies.

BPI chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala announced the transition in a letter to staff on the morning of 22 October 2026. He said it would ensure continuity while positioning the bank for further growth.

GO'S CAREER IN BANKING

Go is a banking veteran of more than two decades and a 23-year BPI veteran. She previously served as president of BPI Family Savings Bank, where she led its transformation and integration into BPI. Before joining the bank she held leadership positions at Citibank, Ayala Land and Procter & Gamble.

As head of consumer banking, Go played a pivotal role in modernising the franchise, deepening customer relationships and expanding the retail footprint. She also strengthened the integration of physical and digital banking capabilities. She topped the 1991 CPA licensure examination, graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines Diliman and earned an MBA with honors from Harvard Business School.

LIMCAOCO'S TENURE AND RECENT RESULTS

Limcaoco was appointed president and CEO in 2021. BPI now serves more than 19 million customers and employs over 23,000 Filipinos. During his tenure the bank upgraded its technology infrastructure, cybersecurity and digital banking capabilities, and advanced financial inclusion through initiatives such as Agency Banking and digital-first banking solutions.

The Asian Banker named Limcaoco Best Bank CEO in the Philippines in 2026. BPI reported net income of PHP 48.9 billion for the first nine months of 2026. At The Asian Banker Philippine Awards 2024, its BPI Gold programme was named Best Wealth Management Bank in the country.

ASSET QUALITY AND A SHORT TENURE

The leadership change comes as BPI’s nonperforming loan ratio climbed to 2.50% at the end of September 2026. Provisions for potential credit losses rose 69.2% to ₱19.9 billion in the first nine months, from about ₱11.8 billion a year earlier.

Limcaoco’s six years are the shortest tenure among BPI’s four most recent chief executives. Xavier Loinaz served about 22 years, from 1982 to 2004, Aurelio Montinola III nine years until 2013, and Cezar Consing eight years until 2021.

BPI ranked second by assets, at ₱3.66 trillion, according to figures cited by Bankero. The Ayala-led bank had deposits of ₱2.78 trillion and loans of ₱2.6 trillion.

ROUTE TO THE HANDOVER

Go and Limcaoco will work together in the coming months to complete the transition. BPI continues its banking modernisation and financial inclusion initiatives in the meantime. Go takes office on 26 April 2027, after the stockholders’ meeting and subject to the necessary approvals.
