CRDB Bank, Tanzania's largest domestically owned bank by assets, has launched a dedicated suite of green loan products designed to help more than two million Tanzanians transition away from firewood and charcoal towards renewable energy and clean cooking alternatives. The product range, unveiled in September 2025, covers renewable energy, waste recycling, clean cooking solutions and eco-friendly transport, giving households and small enterprises access to affordable finance for low-carbon choices.

FOUR SECTORS

The Green Loans, introduced by Chief Commercial Officer Boma Raballa, focus on four sectors for micro, small and medium enterprises: renewable energy, waste recycling, clean cooking solutions and eco-friendly transport.

Raballa said implementation had already started in several regions, with the goal of expanding nationwide within the next five years.

The bank said it had designed favourable loan conditions and extended repayment terms, and provides capacity-building support including entrepreneurship training and financial management; it has already disbursed more than TZS 157 billion to qualifying green projects.

GREEN BOND PROGRAMME

CRDB's green bond, issued in 2023 and listed on the Dar es Salaam and Luxembourg stock exchanges, raised TZS 171.82 billion as the first phase of a five-year Medium-Term Note Programme aimed at raising TZS 780 billion (about USD 300 million).
