The Central Bank of Egypt has imposed a financial penalty on HSBC Bank Egypt S.A.E. that HSBC Egypt's financial statements for the first nine months of 2025 record as a charge of about EGP 1.61 billion, roughly $34 million.
HSBC Egypt stated in its financial disclosures that it is implementing corrective actions that have been agreed upon with the Central Bank of Egypt in relation to the fine. The bank did not publicly detail the violations; Enterprise reported that the fine centred on disagreements over how the bank reported its loan portfolio.
EARLIER FAB MISR FINE
The fine against HSBC Egypt is a separate action from the Central Bank's enforcement against First Abu Dhabi Bank's Egyptian subsidiary, FAB Misr, in October 2025, against which the regulator imposed an EGP 1 billion penalty.

The penalty, first disclosed in HSBC Egypt's first-half 2025 financial statements, drew wider media attention in January 2026. The penalty, at about EGP 1.6 billion, is larger than the EGP 1 billion fine imposed on FAB Misr in October 2025.
