Hana Financial Group has valued the social impact created by its environmental, social and governance (ESG) activities in 2025 at 6.86 trillion won, up 24 percent from 5.54 trillion won in 2024. The group said on 29 October that it had published its 2025 ESG Impact Report, which converts that performance into monetary value.
Inclusive finance alone accounted for 1.41 trillion won of the total, the group calculated. The report covers 523 projects carried out by 15 affiliates and six foundations, up from 468 projects measured a year earlier.
WHERE THE VALUE SITS
By category, the social pillar was valued at 3.48 trillion won and governance and economic contribution at 3.09 trillion won, while the environmental pillar came to 302.0 billion won. The report presents its key results under four core themes: climate finance, growth-support finance, inclusive finance and social contribution.
Within inclusive finance, support for low-income and vulnerable groups was the largest item at 1.30 trillion won. Improving financial access added 70.1 billion won, financial support for small business owners 20.7 billion won and management and capability support for them 20.1 billion won.
In climate finance, the report highlights support for renewable energy power generation projects, valued at 205.7 billion won. Growth-support finance, including liquidity for export supply-chain companies and investment in innovative startups, was measured at 62.3 billion won in representative cases.
Social contribution was valued at 306.0 billion won, through childcare support such as building daycare centres and providing care services. Other cases included job projects supporting youth entrepreneurship, re-employment for middle-aged workers and self-reliance for people with disabilities.
TARGETS BEHIND THE NUMBERS
Hana has disclosed the social impact of its ESG activities in monetary terms since 2021. Its published ESG strategy sets a goal of providing 60 trillion won in lending, investment and funding to green and sustainable industries by 2030, and to 1.5 trillion won in social contributions by the same year.
The group joined the Net Zero Banking Alliance in 2022 and aims for zero carbon emissions at its business sites and zero project financing for the coal industry by 2050. "We precisely measured the tangible changes made to the real economy and society at large through our core financial business, beyond the simple amount invested," a Hana Financial official said.
South Korea's banking system is organised around financial holding companies, and Hana is one of five groups, with KB, Shinhan, Woori and NH NongHyup, that own the largest commercial banks alongside securities, insurance and card subsidiaries. Hana reported year-to-date net profit of 3.62 trillion won to the end of the third quarter, up 5.6 percent from a year earlier, and decided to expand annual share buybacks and cancellations to a record 949.0 billion won.
THE TGB VIEW
Hana Financial Group ranks 38th in Asia-Pacific and 81st globally in the TGB Bank Rankings, with US$470.1bn of assets and a 9.0% return on equity at end-2025. The 6.86 trillion won is a calculated valuation of impact, not the amount invested, and the environmental pillar contributed 302.0 billion won of it. The firmer test is the published 2030 commitment of 60 trillion won in green and sustainable lending, investment and funding.
