Handelsbanken confirmed that Michael Green had assumed the role of President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2024, succeeding Carina Åkerström, who had announced in August 2023 that she would retire. The board announced his appointment on 23 October 2023.

Handelsbanken operates a decentralised branch structure, in which individual branch managers hold authority over credit decisions, pricing, and customer relationships.

OPERATIONS OUTSIDE SWEDEN
Beyond Sweden, Handelsbanken operates in Norway and the United Kingdom, having decided in October 2022 to divest its operations in Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands. In the UK it has built a commercial and retail banking network on the same branch-autonomy principles that govern its Nordic operations.
