HSBC has recorded a gain of $4.8 billion on the disposal of its Canadian banking business to Royal Bank of Canada, with the transaction completing on 28 March 2024.

TRANSACTION DETAILS AND FINANCIAL IMPACT

The $4.8 billion gain recorded on the disposal included $0.3 billion of gains on foreign exchange hedges of the sale proceeds and was stated after recycling $1.0 billion of reserve losses.

RBC completed the acquisition on 28 March 2024, assuming HSBC Canada's retail, commercial, and wealth management operations.

In the same quarter, HSBC recognised a $1.1 billion impairment relating to the planned sale of its Argentine banking operations to Grupo Galicia, a deal announced in April 2024 that had yet to complete.

STRATEGIC CONTEXT FOR HSBC'S RESTRUCTURING

Pressure from major shareholders, including Ping An Insurance of China, has focused attention on whether HSBC should consolidate its operations more tightly around Asia.

HSBC has framed these disposals as part of a disciplined approach to capital allocation rather than as a retreat, emphasising that it retains substantial operations in markets outside Asia, including the United Kingdom and the Middle East.
