I&M Bank Kenya appointed Abdi Mohamed as chief executive with effect from 5 October after receiving regulatory approval. The bank disclosed the completed appointment on 6 October. Mohamed is leading the Kenyan banking business rather than the wider regional group. Kihara Maina, who had served as interim chief executive, has returned to his role as I&M Group regional chief executive.
The start date brought forward a transition that had been expected in December. Business Daily reported that Absa Bank Kenya ended Mohamed's gardening leave at the end of September after appointing Yusuf Omari as its substantive chief executive. That allowed Mohamed to join I&M earlier than the restriction attached to his departure had initially permitted. The regulatory clearance converted the previously announced appointment into an effective leadership change.
LEADERSHIP TRANSITION COMPLETED
Mohamed joined I&M after a 32-year career with Barclays and Absa, according to Business Daily. His earlier roles included leading Absa's operations in Tanzania before becoming country chief executive and managing director in Kenya. I&M also identified his positions with the Kenya Bankers Association, Integrated Payment Services and the UN Global Compact Network Kenya.
I&M said Mohamed would focus on customer relationships, sustainable growth and the Kenyan bank's continuing transformation. The group operates across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Mauritius, while Maina retains oversight of those regional businesses. The structure leaves Mohamed with direct responsibility for the Kenyan franchise within the broader group.
RETAIL EXPANSION SETS NEXT TEST
The appointment comes as I&M seeks a larger retail position and invests in technology capable of supporting more customers. Business Daily reported that I&M Bank Kenya's first-quarter net income rose 8.4% to KSh3.42 billion. It placed the bank's assets at KSh550 billion, loans at KSh250 billion and deposits at KSh396 billion.
Mohamed's first reported period in charge will show how the bank balances that expansion with earnings and credit discipline. Investors will also be able to assess whether the leadership handover changes the pace of I&M's retail and technology programme. Until those disclosures arrive, the verified milestone is the completion of the regulatory and employment steps needed for him to assume the role.
