India's Unified Payments Interface processed 20.01 billion transactions in August 2025, crossing the 20 billion monthly mark for the first time since the system's launch a decade ago. The milestone, reported by the National Payments Corporation of India, which manages the UPI infrastructure, represents a 34% year-on-year increase in volume compared with the 14.9 billion transactions processed in August 2024. The total value of payments settled through the network in August 2025 reached Rs 24.85 lakh crore, a 21% rise on a year-on-year basis, confirming that the growth in transaction count was accompanied by a corresponding increase in the monetary value being transferred across the platform each month.
The daily average of 645 million transactions recorded across August 2025 illustrates the degree to which UPI has become a genuinely foundational layer of India's everyday commerce. From peer-to-peer money transfers and bill payments between individuals, through to merchant checkout at the point of sale, e-commerce payments, and government benefit disbursements, the network now handles a breadth of use cases that extends well beyond the peer-to-peer transfers that initially drove its adoption when the system launched in 2016.
PHONPE LEADS VOLUME AS PLATFORM GROWS
Among the major UPI-enabled mobile applications, PhonePe maintained its position as the leading platform by transaction volume in August 2025, processing approximately 9.6 billion transactions during the month. This figure represents roughly 48% of total UPI volume, a concentration that reflects both PhonePe's early-mover advantage in building out its merchant acceptance network and its sustained investment in user acquisition incentives, interface improvements, and partnerships with retailers across the offline and online commerce ecosystem. Google Pay and Paytm hold the second and third positions respectively among major UPI apps by volume, and the competitive dynamics among the leading applications continue to evolve as each invests in new product features.
NPCI operates UPI as a shared open infrastructure layer on which multiple banks and third-party payment application providers compete to acquire and retain users without bilateral settlement dependencies. This open architecture has been central to the platform's rapid adoption, enabling a diverse ecosystem of private fintech companies, public sector banks, and technology giants to build compelling payment products on a common set of standardised application programming interfaces. The resulting competition has driven down the cost of payments for merchants and consumers, fostered product innovation, and produced a level of interoperability that distinguishes UPI from many comparable real-time payment systems operating elsewhere in the world.
INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION AND LONG-RUN TRAJECTORY
The 20 billion monthly milestone arrives as NPCI International, the entity responsible for taking UPI to overseas markets, has been extending the platform's geographic reach. UPI-enabled payments are now accepted in a growing number of countries across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, supporting Indian travellers, students, and the diaspora with a familiar and cost-effective payment method that does not require foreign currency cash or international credit card fees. The international roll-out has been executed gradually but is adding a new dimension to the UPI growth story beyond the domestic market, with bilateral agreements between NPCI and foreign payment system operators creating linked networks that benefit cross-border commerce.
The 34% annual volume growth rate in August and the four-year compound annual growth rate of 32% cited in Adyen's comparable disclosures place UPI among the world's fastest-growing real-time payment systems by absolute transaction count. Tribune India and NDTV both reported the August milestone, with NDTV noting the Rs 24 lakh crore transaction value as a key indicator of the system's growing economic significance, while Tribune India highlighted the 34% year-on-year volume growth as the defining statistic of the record month.
