Austria has a dense, multi-tier banking system of 445 credit institutions, reflecting the decentralised Raiffeisen and savings-bank sectors: 276 Raiffeisen co-operatives and 48 savings banks operate alongside joint-stock banks, Volksbanks, building societies and specialist lenders. Concentration is low by euro-area standards, with the five largest credit institutions holding 37.1% of sector assets in 2025 on ECB data. Erste Group and Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) are the two largest groups, followed by UniCredit Bank Austria, BAWAG Group and the regional Raiffeisen Landesbanken.
