Morgan Stanley reported third-quarter net income attributable to the firm of $4.91 billion, with earnings of $3.03 per diluted share. Net revenue rose 12% to $20.34 billion. Equity trading revenue climbed 41% to $5.8 billion, supporting the increase in group profit. Fixed-income trading revenue fell 7.3% to $2.01 billion.

The bank's results followed a volatile quarter for global markets and an active US earnings season for large lenders. Investment-banking revenue increased 2% to $2.16 billion. Wealth-management revenue rose 10.1% to $9.07 billion. The division recorded $232 billion of net new assets, which Morgan Stanley described as a quarterly record.

EQUITIES DRIVE THE QUARTER

The 41% increase in equities revenue was the clearest source of growth in the institutional securities business. It more than offset the decline in fixed-income trading and the modest rise in investment banking. The mix underlined Morgan Stanley's exposure to client activity in equity markets.

Investment banking remained comparatively subdued despite stronger overall revenue. The 2% increase left advisory and underwriting growth well behind the performance of equities, limiting the breadth of the institutional revenue expansion.

WEALTH ASSETS ACCELERATE

The record inflow into wealth management strengthened a business that provides recurring asset-based fees alongside market-sensitive institutional revenue. Higher divisional revenue suggested the inflows were already supporting the franchise, although future fee benefits will depend on asset levels and client allocation.

The next test will be whether equity trading activity remains strong while fixed-income and investment-banking revenues recover. Investors will also assess how much of the $232 billion inflow converts into durable fee-bearing assets over subsequent quarters.
