M&T Bank Corporation has published its 2024 Sustainability Report, disclosing nearly $5 billion in total sustainable finance activity during the year and marking the debut issuance of a $500 million Sustainability Bond that directed capital specifically towards renewable energy projects and affordable housing. The report, released on 3 September 2025, sets out progress against the Buffalo-headquartered regional bank's environmental, social, and governance commitments.

The publication shows M&T Bank's sustainable finance activity rising from about $3.1 billion in 2023 to nearly $5 billion in 2024.

ENVIRONMENTAL FINANCE REACHES $1.2 BILLION

Environmental sustainable finance totalled $1.2 billion in 2024 according to the report. Within that figure, $609.6 million was directed to renewable energy projects, covering wind, solar, geothermal, biogas and hydro energy production and storage projects. Green building finance accounted for a further $473.1 million.

The bank separately disclosed that it has achieved 95% of a prior commitment to deploy $1 billion in renewable energy financing, a five-year commitment.

SOCIAL FINANCE AND THE DEBUT BOND

Social sustainable finance reached $3.8 billion in 2024, the single largest category within the bank's nearly $5 billion total.

The $500 million Sustainability Bond issued during 2024 was M&T Bank's first labelled bond and was structured to channel proceeds into renewable energy and affordable housing. The bank has indicated that the Sustainability Bond framework will be subject to transparent impact reporting as proceeds are fully deployed across eligible projects.
