Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group issued a JPY 16.5 billion green bond in the Japanese domestic market on 11 April 2025. The bond was priced on 4 April 2025 and has an 11-year tenor, callable after 10 years.
Proceeds will be allocated to financing or refinancing funds related to the construction of the MUFG Headquarters Building. The eligible category is Green Buildings, with climate change mitigation as the environmental objective.
DEDICATED FRAMEWORK
The bond was issued under the Green Finance Framework that MUFG established in March 2024 specifically for funds related to the construction of its headquarters building in the Japanese domestic market. MUFG obtained a second-party opinion on the framework from Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCR), and the bond itself received an evaluation report from JCR. It is the first issue listed by MUFG under the framework.
The headquarters framework sits alongside MUFG's broader Sustainable Finance Framework, established in July 2024 and reviewed by Sustainalytics, which is aligned with the Green Bond Principles, Social Bond Principles and Sustainability Bond Principles. MUFG has committed to report on the allocation of proceeds from its green bonds.
GREEN BOND TRACK RECORD
MUFG's earlier green bonds were issued in international markets. They include a USD 120 million 10-year bond in December 2018, a EUR 500 million 10-year bond in July 2019 and a EUR 1 billion eight-year bond, callable after seven years, issued in September 2024. The group has also issued a USD 90 million social bond in December 2019 and a JPY 54 billion sustainability bond in September 2020.
