Nium, the Singapore-based cross-border payments infrastructure company, announced on 27 October 2025 that the Central Bank of Brazil had formally authorised it to operate as a Payment Institution in the country.

Nium said the authorisation will allow it to offer locally regulated payment accounts and services in Brazil once operational, including PIX instant payments, TED bank transfers, boletos and the issuance of prepaid cards. The company already serves Brazilian customers through its global licences; the local licence will let it onboard and serve them directly from Brazil and reduce its reliance on intermediaries, it said.

“Securing regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Brazil validates our commitment to building deeply local solutions in the world’s fastest-growing markets,” said Prajit Nanu, Nium’s founder and chief executive.

NEXT STEPS

As part of its next phase, Nium said it is integrating into PIX and finalising partnerships with local financial institutions to bring its services to market. The company also said it is seeking a foreign exchange licence in Brazil to extend its local cross-border capabilities.

LATIN AMERICA

Nium said Latin American clients account for 18% of the total transactions it has processed so far in 2025, and that more than 95% of all payments it processes are now settled over local rails. The company said the Brazilian licence would streamline its operations and support the growth of its domestic and cross-border pay-in and payout capabilities in the market.

“Brazil is not just a market for us, it’s a critical node in our global infrastructure,” Nanu said.
