ADP and PNC Bank announced a strategic partnership that will bring ADP's payroll and HR capabilities directly into PNC's digital banking platform. The new offering, PNC Payroll by ADP, puts payroll, HR, banking and payments together for small businesses, which the companies said increasingly seek integrated technology experiences.
The service brings payroll, HR, benefits, time, insurance and retirement solutions into PNC's digital banking experience, so that businesses can manage payroll alongside the bank's cash management and payment capabilities in a single digital environment. The companies said it helps reduce operational complexity and make it easier for small businesses to manage cash flow, payments, compliance and payroll.
HOW THE OFFERING WORKS
Small businesses traditionally manage payroll, HR and banking across multiple systems, the companies said. By embedding ADP's AI-enabled payroll and HR capabilities into PNC's digital experience, they said, businesses can manage critical operations with greater confidence and accuracy.
Small business banking customers will reach payroll, HR, time tracking, insurance and retirement solutions directly through their digital banking platform. The offering is designed for firms ranging from startups and one-person operations to more established companies looking to scale, and ADP said it is built on its experience serving more than 900,000 small businesses.
PNC Payroll by ADP will combine digital self-service capabilities with access to live ADP payroll experts around the clock. According to ADP, AI-powered capabilities help automate routine tasks while its payroll experts provide the guidance businesses need to pay and manage their staff.
EMBEDDED PAYROLL AND THE BANK BEHIND IT
ADP described the agreement as the latest expansion of its embedded payroll offerings. It launched ADP Embedded Payroll as a way for small-business software providers to offer integrated payroll with support for payroll processing, payments and tax compliance.
ADP's flagship partnership for the product is with Fiserv, through a collaboration with Clover. Matt Farwell has said ADP Embedded Payroll brings payroll directly into the platforms business owners already use daily, saving time and helping to reduce errors. More than 1.1 million clients across more than 140 countries rely on ADP, the company says.
PNC describes itself as one of the largest diversified financial services institutions in the United States. It reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $2.1 billion and third-quarter average deposits of $461.2 billion. Card and cash management revenue rose $32 million, driven by increased treasury management product revenue and growth in customer relationships and activity, the bank said.
WHAT THE EXECUTIVES SAID
"Small businesses want technology that works together seamlessly," said Matt Farwell, president of Small Business Services at ADP. "This collaboration brings together two of the systems small businesses rely on most: banking and payroll."
"Our clients rely on us for the tools and support they need to build and grow their businesses," said Dave Shorten, head of SMB Treasury Management at PNC Bank. He said the collaboration combines ADP's small business expertise and scalable solutions with PNC's relationship-driven approach to banking, supporting small businesses at every stage of growth.
