SEB appointed deputy chief executive Jonas Ahlström as acting president and chief executive after Johan Torgeby resigned. Torgeby left both the executive role and his seat on the bank's board on October 6. SEB said Ahlström's appointment remains subject to regulatory approval.

Torgeby told the board that he was stepping down for personal and family-related reasons. His departure took effect immediately after nearly ten years leading the Swedish bank. The board said it had started the process of recruiting a permanent successor.

A DECADE-LONG TENURE ENDS

Torgeby joined SEB in 2009 and held several senior posts before becoming chief executive. He was previously co-head of the division then known as Large Corporates & Financial Institutions. He had served on the bank's group executive committee since 2014.

Board chair Marcus Wallenberg credited Torgeby with strengthening SEB's position during a period of substantial change. The bank did not announce a new operating strategy alongside the transition. The immediate governance change is therefore an acting appointment rather than a completed succession.

SUCCESSOR SEARCH MOVES TO THE BOARD

Ahlström, 48, joined SEB in 2005 and has served on its group executive committee since 2020. His acting appointment remains subject to regulatory approvals. SEB's A and C shares closed on October 6 down 0.99% and 0.85%, respectively, after the stock had fallen more than 1.3% following the announcement, according to market data reported by Finanstidning.

SEB had already scheduled third-quarter results for October 22, and its earlier invitation named Torgeby as a presenter. The bank has not said who will now present the results or when a permanent chief executive will be installed. Regulatory approval for Ahlström and the board's permanent recruitment process are the next disclosed milestones.
