FNB launched a cryptocurrency investment service for South African customers through its banking app. The service, provided with local digital-asset platform VALR, offers Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and USDT. Customers can begin with R10 and trade around the clock. It is available through four of FNB’s existing share-investing products.
The four products are Shares Zero, Share Investor, Share Saver and Share Builder. Purchases are funded from customers’ FNB accounts, while the assets cannot be transferred into or out of the platform. FNB said the ring-fenced model supports security, compliance and exchange-control requirements. The bank plans to widen the available asset range and provide educational material on crypto risks.
FIVE DIGITAL ASSETS WITHIN THE BANKING APP
FNB’s own product page says users can buy, hold and sell digital assets in the app and identifies R10 as the minimum entry point. The page also says the bank applies institutional infrastructure, monitoring and controls to the service. VALR supplies the digital-asset platform behind the offer, according to two South African reports.
FNB said client interest in alternative investments informed the launch. The bank presents the service as a way to diversify existing portfolios while acknowledging the volatility of cryptocurrency markets. Round-the-clock access means users can trade outside conventional securities-market hours, but it also leaves customers exposed to price changes at any time.
RING-FENCING SHAPES THE CUSTOMER OFFER
The restriction on moving crypto into or out of the platform makes the service a bank-contained investment offer rather than a transferable wallet. Customers fund purchases from FNB accounts and keep the digital assets inside the FNB environment. That design gives the bank tighter control over compliance and exchange-control processes.
The launch adds another bank-linked route into cryptocurrency investing in South Africa, where Discovery Bank introduced a service with Luno in 2025. FNB has not disclosed customer targets or trading-volume forecasts. The next measurable milestones will be reported take-up, any expansion beyond the initial five assets and delivery of the promised risk education.
