Truist Financial split its consumer and small-business leadership after Dontá Wilson prepared to leave the US bank. Shimna Sameer became chief consumer banking officer on 19 October. Jeff Warner is due to become chief small business banking officer on 31 October. Wilson, who led the combined business, is due to leave on 31 December.
The bank also appointed D. Steve Boland as vice-chair, effective 1 December. Boland and Sameer previously held senior roles at Bank of America, while Warner spent more than 25 years at PNC. All three will report to Truist chief executive Mike Lyons. The changes separate responsibility for consumer banking and small businesses while adding a senior executive focused on strategic execution.
DIVIDED MANDATE
Sameer will oversee consumer banking after joining Truist in July to lead wealth management. Her move leaves Jeff Dunn and Bryan Cram serving as interim co-heads of the wealth unit. Warner was most recently PNC's head of small business banking.
Banking Dive reported that Wilson was the final member of the executive management team formed through the 2019 merger of SunTrust and BB&T. Charlotte Business Journal reported that he would support the transition through year-end. The departure therefore removes another link to the leadership structure created by the merger.
STRATEGY EXECUTION
Truist said the appointments were intended to create a simpler and more accountable operating model. Lyons told investors that the structure would sharpen focus and flatten the organisation, with deposit growth, client experience and disciplined execution among the priorities.
The next milestones are Warner's and Boland's start dates and Wilson's year-end departure. Investors will also watch how Truist fills the permanent wealth-management leadership roles and whether the revised structure changes deposit growth or small-business performance.
