African Bank on Tuesday confirmed the permanent appointment of Zweli Manyathi as Group Chief Executive Officer with effect from 25 August 2026, following approval from the South African Prudential Authority. The move ends a period of interim leadership that began earlier this year when the board elevated Manyathi to run the group on a temporary basis pending regulatory clearance and the finalisation of the succession process.
In a stock exchange announcement published through the JSE's SENS platform, the lender said Manyathi, who had served as interim chief executive since 6 March 2026, would take on the role on a permanent basis after the regulatory clearance was received. The Prudential Authority's sign-off is a standard requirement for the appointment of senior banking executives under the South African supervisory framework and applies to all systemically relevant lenders in the country.
FROM INTERIM ROLE TO PERMANENT APPOINTMENT
Manyathi joined African Bank in 2022 as Chief Executive for Business and Commercial banking, taking on responsibility for building out the segment as part of the group's strategic diversification away from its historically unsecured lending base. He was elevated to interim group chief executive on 6 March 2026, providing continuity during the search for a permanent successor at the top of the group.
In its announcement, African Bank said the Prudential Authority's endorsement paved the way for the board to confirm the appointment on a substantive basis. The regulator scrutinises the qualifications, experience and fit-and-proper status of candidates before granting approval for the country's most senior banking positions.
Manyathi has been appointed to the bank's Social, Ethics and Transformation Committee (SETCOM), the Model Executive Committee (MEC) and the Strategic Planning and Loss Executive Committee (SPLEC), formalising his role on the group's key governance and risk-management forums. His committee memberships align his executive responsibilities with the board-level oversight structures that supervise strategy, risk and social impact at African Bank.
FOUR DECADES OF BANKING EXPERIENCE
Manyathi brings more than 40 years of experience across retail, business and commercial banking to the permanent role. Prior to joining African Bank he served as Chief Executive of Business and Commercial banking at Standard Bank, one of South Africa's big-four lenders, and previously held senior positions at First National Bank, part of the FirstRand group. His long tenure in South African banking gives him deep familiarity with the country's regulatory framework and competitive dynamics.
That background is expected to be central to the strategic direction African Bank pursues under his substantive leadership. The lender, which was placed into curatorship in 2014 and subsequently restructured, has been rebuilding its franchise around a broader banking proposition that includes business and commercial banking alongside its consumer credit heritage, positioning it to compete more effectively across a wider customer base.
The board's confirmation of Manyathi, following nearly six months in the interim role, provides continuity as African Bank pushes ahead with its strategic agenda. With the Prudential Authority approval now in hand, attention will turn to the group's next set of financial results and the strategic priorities Manyathi articulates as substantive chief executive over the coming reporting cycles, alongside execution of the operational and strategic initiatives he has overseen since March.
