Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait has appointed Giel-Jan M. Van Der Tol as Group Chief Executive Officer effective 1 July 2025, following regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Kuwait. The appointment ends the bank's period under interim leadership and brings in an executive with a senior background at one of the Gulf region's largest banking groups, signalling the board's intention to accelerate strategic momentum under dedicated permanent leadership.

Van Der Tol joins from Emirates NBD Bank, where he held senior leadership roles, giving him direct experience of operating at scale within a major Gulf commercial bank. His move to ABK positions him to lead an institution that describes itself as a leading retail and commercial bank in the region, with operations spanning Kuwait and a number of international markets serving both retail and corporate clients.

AL SUMAIT REMAINS AS DEPUTY GROUP CEO

Abdulla Al Sumait, who had been serving as acting head of the bank prior to Van Der Tol's arrival, will remain with the institution in the role of Deputy Group CEO. The arrangement provides continuity of senior management during the leadership transition and ensures that institutional knowledge accumulated during the interim period is retained at the executive level rather than lost through a complete leadership change.

Central bank approval requirements for CEO appointments are standard across Gulf Cooperation Council member states, where regulators play an active role in vetting the suitability and experience of individuals appointed to lead banking institutions. The involvement of the Central Bank of Kuwait in formally approving Van Der Tol's appointment reflects that established framework and underlines the regulatory oversight applied to senior executive changes at licensed banks operating in the country.

Van Der Tol's background at Emirates NBD, which is headquartered in Dubai and ranks among the largest banks in the Middle East by assets, will have provided familiarity with the competitive dynamics and customer expectations of Gulf banking. His tenure there in senior leadership positions is likely to have covered areas including retail and corporate banking strategy, digital transformation, and the management of large financial services operations across multiple jurisdictions.

ABK SEEKS STRATEGIC MOMENTUM UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP

Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait operates across retail and commercial banking segments and has in recent years sought to modernise its digital channels and expand its product offering to meet evolving customer demands in a competitive domestic market. The arrival of an externally recruited CEO with Gulf banking experience suggests the board is focused on injecting fresh strategic direction alongside operational continuity provided by Al Sumait in his deputy role.

Kuwait's banking sector has navigated a period of measured credit growth compared with some of its Gulf neighbours, with the domestic economy closely tied to oil revenues and government spending cycles. Banks operating in the market have placed increasing emphasis on fee-based income, digital banking adoption and corporate lending as they seek to diversify revenue streams and improve returns for shareholders.

ABK did not publish details of Van Der Tol's specific mandate or strategic priorities at the time of the appointment announcement, which was made through regulatory channels as required for entities listed on the Boursa Kuwait stock exchange. The bank indicated that further communications would follow as the new CEO takes up his responsibilities and begins engaging with the institution's various stakeholder groups across its domestic and international operations.
