Banco Angolano de Investimentos raised AOA57.5 billion through the first sustainability bond issued by an Angolan company on the BODIVA exchange. The three-year senior unsecured issue carries a 17% annual coupon and matures on 21 September 2029. BAI exercised a greenshoe option after demand exceeded the initial offer.
The bank initially offered five million bonds at AOA10,000 each, targeting AOA50 billion. Investors submitted orders worth AOA65.17 billion, equal to 130.35% of the base offer. The final allocation included 750,000 additional bonds and represented 113.35% coverage of the enlarged issue.
PROCEEDS LINKED TO ELIGIBLE PROJECTS
BAI intends to use the proceeds to finance or refinance eligible projects with environmental and/or social benefits under its sustainable bond framework. The structure combines general credit exposure to the bank with reporting on how funds are allocated. Investors will therefore need both financial performance and credible use-of-proceeds disclosure.
The Africa Local Currency Bond Fund participated as an anchor investor with the local-currency equivalent of $10 million. Its involvement added institutional demand to the domestic placement. Settlement took place on 21 September and the bonds were admitted to trading the following day.
LOCAL MARKET DEPTH TESTED
The oversubscription indicates demand for high-yielding local-currency instruments carrying a sustainability label. It does not remove risks from inflation, interest rates or BAI’s credit profile. Secondary-market liquidity will show whether the issue broadens participation beyond the initial buyers.
The next milestone is BAI’s first allocation and impact report showing which projects received financing. Investors will also watch coupon payments and secondary trading through the 2029 maturity. Clear reporting will be important if other Angolan issuers are to use the transaction as a template.
