Bank of Africa Tanzania has appointed Esther Cecil Maruma as its new Managing Director with effect from 6 May 2024, bringing a seasoned banking executive with more than 17 years of financial services experience to the top operational role at the Moroccan-owned institution. The appointment places a leader with a background spanning global markets and local Tanzanian banking at the head of a subsidiary of the BMCE Group, one of Africa's most expansive pan-continental banking groups.

Maruma joins Bank of Africa Tanzania from Absa Bank Tanzania, where she served as Head of Global Markets, a position that placed her at the centre of the bank's foreign exchange, fixed income, and treasury operations. That role required oversight of market risk, client solutions for corporate treasury clients, and regulatory engagement in respect of the bank's trading activities, providing her with a technical grounding in precisely the business lines most relevant to a bank serving clients with cross-border financial needs across a resource-rich economy.

A CAREER BUILT ACROSS MARKETS

Maruma's professional trajectory over more than 17 years in financial services encompasses both the technical demands of global markets business and the relationship dimensions of corporate and institutional banking in the Tanzanian context. Her experience at Absa Bank Tanzania, one of the country's leading foreign-owned banks, provided exposure to an institution with strong international capital markets affiliations and a broad corporate banking franchise, giving her insight into the full range of services demanded by sophisticated banking clients.

The breadth of her experience is viewed by Bank of Africa Tanzania as a strategic asset in an operating environment where corporate clients increasingly require sophisticated treasury management, foreign currency hedging, and cross-border payment capabilities alongside conventional commercial banking services. Tanzania's economy, driven by tourism, agriculture, mining, and natural resource exports, generates substantial foreign currency flows, and banks with capable global markets teams are well-placed to capture the advisory and transactional revenues associated with managing those flows.

Maruma's appointment has also been noted as significant from a leadership diversity perspective. Senior female executives taking the top operational role at commercial banks in Tanzania remain relatively uncommon, and her appointment reflects a broader trend of major African banking groups actively identifying and promoting local talent — including women — into the most senior leadership positions, both as a matter of business strategy and in response to growing expectations from regulators and investors regarding board and management diversity.

PART OF THE BMCE GROUP NETWORK

Bank of Africa Tanzania operates as a subsidiary of BMCE Group, the Casablanca-headquartered Moroccan banking conglomerate. BMCE Group has built an extensive footprint across sub-Saharan Africa through the Bank of Africa brand, operating in numerous countries across the continent and positioning itself as one of Africa's leading pan-continental banking groups with a particular emphasis on trade finance and corporate banking in markets with strong commodity and natural resource activity.

Maruma's remit as Managing Director encompasses oversight of the bank's commercial and retail operations in Tanzania, management of its corporate client relationships, and stewardship of its treasury and global markets functions. She will be responsible for executing the bank's strategy in the Tanzanian market within the framework and governance standards set by BMCE Group, and for maintaining productive relationships with the Bank of Tanzania and other domestic regulatory bodies.

The Tanzanian banking market has seen increasing competitive activity in recent years, with foreign-owned subsidiaries, regional African banking groups, and domestic lenders competing for a growing pool of corporate, SME, and retail banking mandates as the country's economy continues to expand. Maruma's appointment signals Bank of Africa Tanzania's intention to bring experienced, locally grounded leadership to bear in navigating that competitive landscape, with a leader who understands both the technical requirements of modern banking and the dynamics of the Tanzanian client environment.
