BMO Financial Group has appointed Aron Levine as Group Head and President, BMO U.S., effective 7 July 2025. Levine joins from Bank of America, where he spent 32 years and served most recently as President of Preferred Banking. His appointment places an experienced executive with deep roots in the American retail and wealth management industry at the head of BMO's United States business, a platform the Canadian bank has been building and integrating following a major acquisition in recent years.

The hire reflects the scale of BMO's ambitions in the United States. The bank significantly expanded its American footprint through the acquisition of Bank of the West, a transaction that substantially increased its customer base, branch network, and balance sheet exposure south of the border. Levine's remit encompasses three major business lines operating from BMO's Chicago headquarters: Personal and Business Banking, Commercial Banking, and Wealth Management.

THREE DECADES AT BANK OF AMERICA

Levine's 32-year career at Bank of America spanned a wide range of consumer and wealth management functions, culminating in his role as President of Preferred Banking. That position required managing a high-value client segment with distinct service expectations, demanding a combination of product knowledge, client relationship management capability, and operational discipline that large diversified banks prize most highly in their senior commercial executives.

His three decades at one of the largest financial institutions in the world also gave him extensive experience navigating the regulatory environment, competitive pressures, and operational complexities that define large-scale American retail and commercial banking. For BMO, which has been working to integrate its expanded United States platform and extract sustainable returns from its post-acquisition investment, that experience is directly relevant to the challenge Levine now faces.

The announcement was made as part of a broader set of executive appointments communicated by BMO Financial Group in June 2025. Levine's start date of 7 July 2025 positions him to shape the next phase of BMO's U.S. strategy at a point when the integration work is well advanced and the focus is shifting toward organic growth, deepening client relationships, and competitive positioning against the major national players.

LEVINE TO LEAD INTEGRATED U.S. PLATFORM

In his new role, Levine oversees BMO's three principal U.S. business lines from the Chicago headquarters. Personal and Business Banking serves everyday consumers and smaller enterprises, Commercial Banking targets mid-market and larger corporate clients, and Wealth Management addresses the investment and financial planning needs of affluent and institutional customers. Combining oversight of all three within a single Group Head position reflects the integrated operating model BMO has been pursuing in the United States.

Levine's appointment signals that BMO wants experienced American banking leadership at the top of its U.S. franchise at a stage when the bank is competing more directly with the major national players for clients, talent, and market share. His background at Bank of America, one of the defining benchmarks in American retail and commercial banking, makes him a credible figure for that competitive positioning effort. The bank will expect him to use his industry relationships and institutional knowledge to accelerate growth across all three business lines.
