Chipper Cash, the Africa-focused cross-border payments platform, has been named as the launch partner for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin in Africa, the two companies announced on 4 September 2025. RLUSD is a US dollar-backed stablecoin developed by Ripple, and the partnership with Chipper Cash will deploy the instrument as settlement infrastructure for faster and lower-cost cross-border payment flows into and across the African continent, building on an earlier working relationship between the two companies in the cross-border payments space.
Chipper Cash serves more than five million customers across Africa, a base that provides an immediate distribution channel for the new RLUSD capability. The company has previously collaborated with Ripple to improve the speed and cost profile of payment corridors serving African markets, and the stablecoin partnership deepens that cooperation by introducing a programmable, dollar-denominated settlement layer to the arrangement. Chipper Cash has framed the partnership as part of its broader ambition to provide institutional-grade blockchain payment infrastructure to its African customer base and to the business clients operating across its network.
RLUSD AS A CROSS-BORDER SETTLEMENT TOOL
RLUSD is denominated in and pegged to the US dollar, designed to provide the price stability that makes a digital asset usable as a reliable settlement medium in commercial payment flows. Unlike cryptocurrencies whose market values fluctuate significantly, a dollar-backed stablecoin allows senders and recipients to transact with confidence that the value delivered will correspond to the value sent, eliminating the foreign exchange volatility risk that has historically limited the adoption of blockchain-based payment rails for mainstream commercial use in emerging markets.
For African cross-border payments in particular, the use of a stablecoin settlement layer directly addresses a well-documented structural cost problem. Conventional correspondent banking routes for payment flows into and within Africa typically involve multiple intermediary institutions, each charging fees and introducing settlement delays that can extend the end-to-end transfer time by days. By routing transactions through a blockchain-based infrastructure using RLUSD as the settlement asset, Chipper Cash aims to reduce both the cost and the processing time for cross-border transfers, a proposition with direct relevance for the large volumes of remittances flowing into African markets from diaspora communities across North America, Europe, and the Gulf region.
STRATEGIC POSITIONING AND RIPPLE'S AFRICA FOCUS
Ripple's decision to prioritise Africa for the RLUSD rollout and to select Chipper Cash as its launch partner reflects the strategic importance the company places on markets where friction in conventional payment systems is greatest and where the potential impact of faster, lower-cost alternatives is therefore most pronounced. Africa accounts for some of the world's most expensive remittance corridors as measured by the average cost of sending a fixed sum, a metric that international bodies have highlighted as a constraint on financial inclusion and household income in recipient communities.
The partnership is expected to be implemented progressively as Chipper Cash integrates RLUSD payment rails into its existing cross-border transfer flows. The integration will require technical work on the Chipper Cash platform as well as regulatory engagement in the jurisdictions where the company operates, given that stablecoin use in payments remains subject to evolving frameworks across African regulatory environments. Neither company disclosed specific volume targets or a detailed implementation timeline in the initial announcement, but both have characterised the collaboration as a long-term commitment to improving cross-border payment outcomes for individuals and businesses across the continent.
