Citi launched Mastercard’s Smart Subscriptions capability for eligible cardholders in the United Arab Emirates. The feature is available through Citi’s mobile-banking application. It allows users to view and manage recurring digital subscriptions from one interface. Mastercard and Citi described the UAE as Citi’s first market globally for the solution.

Fintech News UAE separately reported the launch on 18 September. The service uses Mastercard technology and itemised receipt information powered by Ethoca. The companies said Citi was the first bank in the Middle East to deploy the capability. Those first-market claims are attributable to the companies’ joint release.

RECURRING PAYMENTS MOVE INTO BANKING APP

The feature is intended to give cardholders a consolidated view of subscriptions charged to their cards. Users can identify recurring merchants and review payment details without checking each service separately. The practical scope will depend on merchant data quality and the subscriptions recognised by the system.

Ethoca’s role adds itemised receipt information where the necessary transaction data are available. That can help customers recognise charges and decide whether to keep or manage a subscription. The launch does not remove contractual cancellation terms imposed by individual merchants.

ADOPTION WILL SHOW CUSTOMER VALUE

Subscription-management tools can reduce uncertainty around recurring card charges and provide banks with another digital-service feature. They may also help limit disputes where customers do not recognise a merchant or transaction. The reviewed sources did not disclose usage targets or financial terms for the partnership.

The next milestone will be customer adoption in the UAE and any extension to other Citi markets. Future disclosures could show how many subscriptions are identified and whether the feature reduces disputes. For now, the launch is limited to the eligible UAE cardholders and functionality described by the companies.
