Crédit Agricole CIB, the corporate and investment banking arm of the Crédit Agricole group, appointed Jean-François Balaÿ as its Chief Executive Officer effective 6 May 2025. The appointment was made by the bank's Board of Directors.
Balaÿ succeeds Xavier Musca, who had served as CEO of Crédit Agricole CIB since September 2022. The handover completes a succession process overseen by the Board under Chairman Philippe Brassac, who leads the wider Crédit Agricole SA group. The appointment was announced on 25 April 2025, when the Board of Directors named Balaÿ, previously Deputy CEO, to take office on 6 May.
BACKGROUND
Crédit Agricole CIB provides financing, capital markets, advisory and international trade services to corporations, financial institutions and public sector clients globally.
The transition at Crédit Agricole CIB takes place in the context of a broader leadership renewal across the Crédit Agricole group. At the same time that Balaÿ assumed the CIB chief executive role, changes were also under way at the level of Crédit Agricole SA itself, with Olivier Gavalda appointed to succeed Philippe Brassac as group CEO upon the latter reaching the maximum age limit for the position.
BRASSAC'S OVERSIGHT OF THE TRANSITION
Philippe Brassac, then chairman of Crédit Agricole CIB's Board of Directors, oversaw the appointment process for the CIB's new chief executive.
No changes to Crédit Agricole CIB's strategic direction were announced alongside Balaÿ's appointment.
