Kuwait Finance House formally launched KFH Egypt in February 2025, unveiling a fully operational Islamic banking franchise under the KFH brand and completing the conversion of what was formerly Ahli United Bank Egypt. KFH Egypt Chief Executive Hala Sadiq confirmed the complete integration of the institution, signalling that the rebranding, operational conversion and regulatory transition had been completed to the satisfaction of both Egyptian and Kuwaiti banking authorities.
The launch marks Kuwait Finance House's establishment in Egypt as a major new market, extending the Kuwaiti Islamic banking group's geographic footprint into one of the Arab world's most populous and economically significant countries. Egypt's banking sector has expanded rapidly in recent years, sustained by a large and young consumer base, substantial public infrastructure investment and the country's position as a hub for trade and financial services serving North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean region.
REBRANDING FROM AHLI UNITED BANK EGYPT
KFH Egypt was developed through the acquisition and conversion of Ahli United Bank Egypt, which had operated as a conventional commercial bank serving retail and corporate clients across the country. The process of transforming a conventional institution into a fully Sharia-compliant bank is operationally complex: it requires the redesign of the entire product suite, the replacement of interest-bearing instruments with Sharia-compliant equivalents such as Murabaha, Ijara and Musharaka structures, extensive staff training, and the reconfiguration of technology systems to accommodate Islamic banking accounting and reporting requirements.
The rebranding to KFH Egypt carries the group's brand equity and the assurance of Sharia compliance standards that KFH maintains across its network. For customers, the transition from Ahli United Bank Egypt to KFH Egypt represents access to a broader group network, including KFH's established international correspondent banking relationships, its treasury and capital markets capabilities, and its experience serving Gulf Cooperation Council investors and businesses who travel, invest and trade across the region.
Hala Sadiq's confirmation of complete integration is significant because it marks the point at which KFH Egypt can compete as a full-service Islamic bank on equal terms with established domestic players, rather than operating as a bank in the process of transition. The Egyptian market includes several Islamic banking institutions, but demand for Sharia-compliant financial products has continued to grow as the population becomes more aware of Islamic finance options and as regulatory frameworks for the sector mature.
STRATEGIC SIGNIFICANCE FOR KFH GROUP
Egypt represents a strategically important addition to KFH Group's network because of its combination of scale — a population exceeding 100 million — and a large Muslim consumer segment that has historically been served by Islamic finance at a lower per-capita rate than Gulf markets. The structural gap between consumer demand for Sharia-compliant products and the market's current capacity to supply them creates growth opportunity for a well-capitalised institution with the brand recognition and operational expertise that KFH brings.
For KFH Group, which operates across the Gulf, Asia and Europe, the Egypt launch opens a new corridor for cross-border business involving Gulf investors active in the Egyptian market, Egyptian expatriates in the Gulf states and corporate clients with operations spanning both regions. KFH's ability to serve clients across multiple jurisdictions within a single Sharia-compliant framework is a differentiator in a market where large conventional banks dominate but Islamic finance is gaining ground. The group said the launch positions KFH Egypt to participate in Egypt's long-term economic development as the country pursues its infrastructure and industrial diversification programmes.
