President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego as Governor of the Bank of Uganda, ending a vacancy at the head of the country's central bank that had persisted for about three years following the death of the institution's long-serving former governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, who died in January 2022 after more than two decades leading the institution.
The appointment was announced in February 2025.
THREE YEARS WITHOUT A CONFIRMED GOVERNOR
Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile led the Bank of Uganda for approximately twenty years.
During the vacancy, the Bank of Uganda operated under acting leadership arrangements, with Atingi-Ego as acting governor.
Dr. Atingi-Ego, a former IMF official and former executive director of MEFMI, had served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda since 2020 and had been acting as Governor since Mutebile's death.
