Nordea announced on 4 December 2024 that it was making changes to its Group Leadership Team, appointing Kirsten Renner as Head of Group Technology and Mads Skovlund Pedersen as Head of Group Business Support, with both taking up their GLT positions from 1 February 2025. The appointments form part of a structural restructuring overseen by President and Group Chief Executive Frank Vang-Jensen.
The announcement also confirmed that Erik Ekman would step down from the Group Leadership Team as part of the changes. Ekman's departure and the elevation of two executives to GLT positions represent a reshaping of the bank's top leadership architecture in two operationally critical areas: technology and business support services.
RENNER TO HEAD GROUP TECHNOLOGY
Kirsten Renner's appointment as Head of Group Technology brings her onto the GLT with responsibility for one of the most strategically significant functions at any major Nordic bank. Technology investment and transformation have been central to Nordea's operational agenda in recent years, as the bank has sought to modernise its core systems, expand its digital channels, and improve the efficiency of its processes across its four home markets of Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.
Renner's elevation to the GLT reflects Nordea's view that technology leadership merits direct representation at the most senior level of group management. As European banks continue to invest heavily in cloud infrastructure, data analytics, and cybersecurity, placing the technology lead within the GLT ensures that these priorities are embedded in group-level strategic and operational discussions from the outset rather than being channelled upward from a second tier of management.
The February 2025 effective date gives Renner and her incoming colleagues time to prepare for the transition and for Nordea to manage the handover of responsibilities in an orderly fashion. The December announcement of a February start is standard practice for significant senior appointments at major banks, providing stakeholders, regulators, and internal teams with advance notice of changes that affect governance and operational continuity.
PEDERSEN TAKES GROUP BUSINESS SUPPORT ROLE
Mads Skovlund Pedersen's appointment as Head of Group Business Support and GLT member positions him to oversee the shared-service and operational backbone functions that underpin Nordea's businesses across its home markets. Business support at a bank of Nordea's scale covers a wide range of activities, including operations, procurement, real estate, and administrative functions, all of which contribute to the cost efficiency metrics that investors and analysts track closely.
Nordea has been focused on maintaining a competitive cost-to-income ratio, and the appointment of a dedicated GLT member for business support signals that the bank intends to continue driving operational efficiency at the group level. Consolidating oversight of these functions under a single GLT executive provides clearer accountability and a more direct line of sight from the CEO to the delivery of cost targets.
The changes to Nordea's GLT reflect the ongoing evolution of the bank's operating model under Vang-Jensen, who has sought to align leadership structures with the bank's strategic priorities. With both new appointments effective from the same date and the simultaneous departure of Ekman, the February transition represents a coherent and coordinated adjustment to the top team rather than a series of isolated changes.
