Nubank has appointed Livia Chanes as chief executive officer of its Brazilian operation, the São Paulo-headquartered digital bank announced on 22 January 2024. Chanes, who had been guiding the Brazilian business as Country Manager since the second half of 2022, steps into the CEO role at the helm of Nubank's largest and most strategically important market, formalising a leadership mandate she had already been exercising in practice for over a year and reflecting the board's confidence in the direction she has set.

The appointment marks a significant development in Nubank's domestic leadership structure. Brazil remains the core of the company's business and the principal engine of its customer growth, making the country CEO position one of the most consequential roles in the entire organisation. The elevation of Chanes to a formal chief executive designation signals that the company considers its Brazilian leadership to be on a settled and effective footing, capable of driving the next phase of growth in a market of exceptional strategic and commercial importance.

A CAREER BUILT INSIDE AND OUTSIDE NUBANK

Chanes brings a blend of internal Nubank experience and deep financial sector grounding to the role. Prior to leading the Brazilian operation, she served as Vice President of Product at Nubank, where she was central to developing the company's product capabilities during its rapid expansion phase in the Brazilian market. Before joining Nubank, she held positions at Itaú Unibanco, one of Brazil's largest and most established traditional banks, and at McKinsey & Company, giving her a perspective that spans both incumbent financial institutions and digital challengers across multiple geographies.

That combination of backgrounds equips Chanes to manage the dual challenges facing Nubank's Brazilian business: sustaining growth in a market where the company already counts tens of millions of customers, and continuing to deepen product penetration while expanding revenue per user. Competition in Brazilian digital banking has intensified considerably as incumbent banks accelerate their own digital investment programmes and as newer fintech entrants compete for attention in specific product categories.

NUBANK CEMENTS DOMESTIC LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE

The formal country CEO designation reflects a maturing of Nubank's organisational structure as the company pursues its international expansion in Mexico and Colombia alongside its Brazilian core. Having a dedicated chief executive for Brazil allows the global leadership team to maintain strategic focus on international markets while ensuring the flagship domestic operation is led with full executive authority and a clear accountability structure that investors and regulators can readily understand.

Nubank's Brazilian business has been instrumental in demonstrating that a digital-only banking model can achieve meaningful scale in a market traditionally characterised by high concentration among a small number of large incumbent institutions. Under Chanes's continuing leadership, the company will seek to build on that foundation by extending financial services to underserved customer segments and growing its credit, insurance, and investment product lines across the country. The bank will also need to navigate a regulatory environment that continues to evolve alongside the digital banking sector, including enhanced scrutiny from the Banco Central do Brasil on issues of consumer credit affordability, interest rate transparency, and data governance — areas where Chanes's combined product and banking background will be directly relevant.
