Rabobank Australia has appointed Caroline Oosterbaan as chief executive and Regional Manager for Australia and New Zealand, effective 1 March 2026. Oosterbaan succeeds Mark Wiessing, who has retired after more than 20 years with the Dutch agricultural lender and more than two years leading the Australasian operations — one of the bank's most strategically significant regional presences outside Europe.

The appointment brings an executive with extensive experience of Rabobank's international wholesale operations into the top role for a franchise built almost entirely around food and agricultural lending. Australia and New Zealand represent a core part of Rabobank's global ambition in this sector, and the choice of a leader from within the group's own international network signals continuity of strategic direction.

EXPERIENCE FROM AMSTERDAM TO THE ANTIPODES

Oosterbaan joins the Australian leadership from the Netherlands, where she served as Global Head of Clients and Portfolio Management for Rabobank's international Wholesale and Rural Business. That position placed her at the centre of the bank's cross-border agricultural lending, client management, and portfolio-risk operations, giving her a broad view of how the group's international network functions and how individual country offices contribute to the wider business strategy.

Her background in wholesale and rural banking aligns directly with the core activities of the Australian franchise. Rabobank Australia operates primarily as a specialised agricultural lender, providing finance to farmers, food-processing companies, and agribusiness supply chains across the country. Unlike diversified retail banks, the franchise does not seek to offer a broad range of personal or business banking products, and its credibility with agricultural clients rests on sector expertise that the new chief executive is expected to reinforce.

Wiessing had held the dual role of CEO of Rabobank Australia and Regional Manager since May 2023, and had spent more than two decades within the Rabobank group across multiple geographies and functions. The bank's media release confirmed his retirement from both positions effective 1 March 2026, and expressed appreciation for his long contribution to the group.

STRATEGIC CONTINUITY FOR AGRI LENDING

The dual structure of the role — combining country chief executive responsibilities in Australia with a broader regional management function covering New Zealand — reflects the way Rabobank has organised its Australasian franchise for operational efficiency. Maintaining one senior executive with oversight of both markets allows for consistent strategic positioning and resource allocation across the two closely related operations.

Rabobank's market position in Australia is built on specialisation rather than scale. The bank has consistently positioned itself as a lender with deeper knowledge of the agricultural sector's cyclical and structural dynamics than any diversified bank can offer, and that positioning requires leadership with direct sector expertise and credibility among farming and agribusiness communities.

Oosterbaan's appointment from within the Rabobank network, rather than from an external competitor or from outside the financial sector, suggests the board concluded that continuity of culture and strategy was the priority at this stage of the franchise's development. Her background in international wholesale and rural banking provides the sector credibility that the role demands, and her direct familiarity with the group's operating model should enable a smooth transition to the Australian leadership.
