Saudi National Bank, the Kingdom's largest lender by assets, has installed Tareq Abdulrahman Al Sadhan as its new chief executive officer, effective 1 May 2024. The appointment, which was disclosed through a bourse filing on 27 March 2024, concludes a period of acting leadership that had prevailed at the bank following turbulent months for the institution. Al Sadhan's arrival brings to the helm of Saudi Arabia's biggest bank a figure with considerable experience at the highest levels of the Kingdom's financial sector.

Al Sadhan joins Saudi National Bank from Riyad Bank, where he served as chief executive until December 2023. His tenure leading one of the Kingdom's principal lenders positions him as a well-recognised figure among Saudi Arabia's corporate and financial community, and his appointment was broadly welcomed by market participants who had been watching closely for a permanent resolution to SNB's leadership situation.

END OF AN ACTING LEADERSHIP PHASE

Talal Al Khereiji, who had been serving as acting chief executive since March 2023, stepped down citing personal circumstances ahead of Al Sadhan's formal commencement. Al Khereiji had assumed the acting role during a period of acute institutional pressure for SNB. The bank had come under intense scrutiny following substantial losses on its equity stake in Credit Suisse, the Swiss lender that was acquired by UBS in a government-brokered emergency rescue in March 2023. At the time of Credit Suisse's failure, SNB was the Swiss bank's largest shareholder, and the resulting losses triggered significant questions about investment decision-making and risk governance within the Kingdom's largest bank.

The subsequent months were marked by efforts to stabilise the institution's public profile, restore investor confidence, and engage constructively with shareholders and regulators. Al Khereiji managed those pressures in an acting capacity for more than a year, a period during which the bank continued to operate its core lending and transaction banking businesses without material disruption to daily operations.

SNB was itself formed through the landmark 2021 merger of National Commercial Bank and Samba Financial Group, creating the combined entity that now holds the position of Saudi Arabia's dominant bank by total assets. The institution is deeply embedded in the Kingdom's financial infrastructure, with a leading position in corporate lending, trade finance, retail banking, and capital markets advisory.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES FOR THE NEW CHIEF

Al Sadhan takes the helm at a bank operating in a market defined by the ambitions of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 economic transformation programme. The government's drive to diversify the economy away from oil revenues has generated substantial demand for project financing, infrastructure lending, and corporate banking services across sectors ranging from tourism and entertainment to technology and manufacturing.

The new chief executive is expected to focus on strengthening SNB's risk management culture and governance frameworks, areas that came into focus following the Credit Suisse episode. He is also likely to oversee continued investment in the bank's digital banking capabilities, an area of growing competitive importance in Saudi Arabia, where several domestic rivals have accelerated technology investment programmes in recent years.

The appointment of a permanent chief executive removes a layer of strategic uncertainty that had lingered over SNB since the events of 2023, providing the bank's management team, employees, and shareholders with a clearer sense of leadership continuity. Al Sadhan's previous experience as a bank chief executive means he arrives without a significant learning curve in the responsibilities of leading a major Saudi financial institution.
