Standard Chartered has appointed Margaret Harwood-Jones as chief executive for Europe and UK, effective 1 September 2026, in a newly created role designed to unify oversight of the bank's business across 11 markets in the region. The appointment marks a significant reshaping of the group's European leadership structure.

Harwood-Jones, currently Global Head of Financing and Securities Services at Standard Chartered, will take on the combined regional mandate as part of a broader refresh of the European management team. Her elevation gives one of the group's senior institutional banking executives responsibility for a large and complex regional footprint.

NEW COMBINED REGIONAL ROLE

The new position brings together responsibility for Standard Chartered's European and UK activities under a single executive, replacing the previous split arrangements and giving the bank a unified point of leadership across its markets in the region. That structure is intended to make it easier to coordinate strategy and client coverage across the 11 markets in scope.

In her existing role as Global Head of Financing and Securities Services, Harwood-Jones has overseen a business that sits at the intersection of transaction banking, custody and financing services for institutional clients. That experience gives her direct familiarity with the client base most relevant to the Europe and UK franchise.

Standard Chartered said the appointment reflects the strategic importance the group attaches to Europe and the UK as a source of institutional clients, capital markets activity and connectivity into its core Asia, Africa and Middle East footprint. The region is a key origination hub for the flows that ultimately move through the group's international network.

GERMANY LEADERSHIP ALSO CHANGES

As part of the same reshuffle, Standard Chartered named Jorg Hessenmuller as chief executive of SCB AG, the group's Germany-based European entity. Hessenmuller previously held senior positions at BNP Paribas, bringing continental European banking experience into the leadership team.

SCB AG plays a specific role in supporting the group's post-Brexit access to EU markets, and appointing a chief executive with a strong continental banking background underlines the importance Standard Chartered attaches to that legal entity. It also strengthens the bench of senior leaders on the continent.

Together, the appointments give Standard Chartered a refreshed leadership line-up for its European operations, aligning the top of the regional structure with the group's ambitions to grow its institutional business across the continent. The moves also provide clearer lines of accountability for delivering on those growth plans.

The changes take effect from 1 September, when Harwood-Jones assumes her new role and Standard Chartered's revised European management team formally begins operating under the unified structure announced by the group. Clients and staff will look for continuity in coverage while the new organisation beds in.

Bringing Europe and the UK under a single regional chief executive is intended to simplify decision-making across the 11 markets covered and to give clients a clearer counterpart within the group. In parallel, the appointment of Hessenmuller to lead SCB AG ensures that the group's Germany-based European entity has focused leadership as the wider reorganisation takes effect.

With senior institutional banking and continental European experience combined at the top of the region, Standard Chartered is positioning itself for closer coordination between its European and UK activities as it looks to grow its institutional franchise across the area.
