Ana Maria Aboitiz-Delgado assumed the role of President and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank of the Philippines on 1 January 2025, becoming the first woman to lead one of the country's largest publicly listed banks. Her appointment, which was announced in June 2024, marks a generational shift at an institution that has positioned digital transformation at the centre of its growth strategy.

She succeeds Edwin Bautista, who retired after 27 years with UnionBank. Bautista oversaw much of the bank's shift towards a digital-first operating model and built a reputation for the institution as one of the more technologically progressive commercial banks in the Philippines. Aboitiz-Delgado is expected to continue and deepen that trajectory.

TWO DECADES DRIVING DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

Aboitiz-Delgado brings more than 20 years of experience at UnionBank to the chief executive role, having led key functions including digital transformation and consumer finance. Her internal track record places her among the architects of the bank's strategic pivot in recent years, which encompassed investments in digital infrastructure, the development of new product channels and an expansion of the bank's retail banking reach.

Her career at the bank spans a period in which Philippine retail banking was reshaped by mobile and internet banking adoption, and UnionBank was among the institutions that pursued digitalisation most aggressively. The bank launched its own digital banking platform and invested in fintech partnerships as part of its drive to serve both existing and underbanked customer segments through lower-cost digital channels.

The appointment reflects a broader trend across Southeast Asian banking, where institutions are increasingly elevating leaders who combine deep operational knowledge with technological fluency. Aboitiz-Delgado's background in consumer finance and digital platforms is seen as well matched to the competitive pressures UnionBank faces from both traditional rivals and a growing cohort of licensed digital banks.

HISTORIC APPOINTMENT AT ABOITIZ-LINKED INSTITUTION

UnionBank has longstanding ties to the Aboitiz Group, one of the Philippines' most prominent conglomerate families, and Aboitiz-Delgado's appointment reinforces those links while signalling a confidence in leadership developed from within the institution. The bank said the transition had been planned to ensure continuity of strategy and management depth.

The new chief executive steps into the role at a time when the Philippine banking sector is navigating a period of sustained credit growth, rising digital competition and ongoing regulatory modernisation by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. UnionBank's balance sheet performance and digital metrics in recent quarters have given the incoming CEO a platform from which to pursue the bank's next phase of expansion.

Bautista's retirement after nearly three decades closes one chapter at the bank while Aboitiz-Delgado's elevation opens another. As the first woman to hold the top position at UnionBank, her appointment is viewed as both operationally significant and symbolic of a gradual broadening of leadership representation across the Philippine financial services industry. The board said the succession plan had been carefully managed to ensure continuity of strategy, and investors will be watching closely whether the bank maintains the pace of digital investment and financial performance that characterised the Bautista years. Aboitiz-Delgado has stated publicly that she remains bullish on UnionBank's prospects as it enters the new year.
