United Overseas Bank has announced two senior leadership appointments, naming Susan Hwee as Head of Group Retail and Lawrence Goh as Head of Group Technology and Operations in a reshuffle that sees the Singapore-based lender realign executive responsibilities across two of its most operationally consequential divisions.

The appointments represent a planned internal succession. Hwee moves into the retail leadership role succeeding Eddie Khoo, who has been appointed Senior Advisor to UOB Vietnam. Goh, in turn, steps into the technology and operations brief that Hwee previously held, completing a rotation that draws on executives with deep institutional knowledge of the bank's systems, processes and strategic priorities.

HWEE TAKES THE RETAIL HELM

Susan Hwee's appointment to Head of Group Retail places her at the centre of UOB's consumer-facing strategy across its regional network. The retail banking division encompasses personal financial services, credit cards, wealth management products and the bank's expanding digital channels, all of which have become increasingly significant as UOB deepens its footprint in Southeast Asian markets. The bank significantly enlarged its retail presence across the region through its acquisition of Citigroup's consumer banking franchises, a move that added substantial customer bases and capabilities in several key markets.

Eddie Khoo, who led the retail division prior to this transition, moves to a senior advisory role focused on UOB Vietnam, a market the bank has identified as an important growth corridor. The arrangement reflects a common approach at large regional banks: leveraging experienced executives in advisory capacities within specific country markets where local knowledge, regulatory familiarity and long-standing client relationships carry particular strategic value. Khoo's transition ensures continuity of institutional experience is retained even as new leadership takes up operational responsibility.

GOH STEPS INTO TECHNOLOGY AND OPERATIONS

Lawrence Goh's appointment as Head of Group Technology and Operations comes at a time when banks across the Asia Pacific region continue to invest heavily in digital infrastructure, cybersecurity resilience and the modernisation of core banking systems. The technology and operations function at UOB is responsible for the platforms and processes that underpin both its retail and wholesale banking services, making it one of the most strategically sensitive leadership roles within the group's organisational structure.

Goh brings direct familiarity with the division from his prior experience working alongside Hwee, which positions him to maintain continuity in ongoing transformation programmes without the disruption that can accompany an external hire into a complex, large-scale operational role. For a bank of UOB's size, with operations spanning Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and other markets, the technology and operations function manages responsibilities that touch virtually every customer interaction and back-office process across the group.

The dual appointment, announced simultaneously by the bank, signals a carefully managed succession rather than an unplanned departure. UOB has in recent years placed consistent emphasis on building internal talent pipelines and developing senior leaders from within, and the movement of both Hwee and Goh reflects that philosophy. The bank confirmed that the changes are effective immediately, with Khoo's transition to his advisory role running in parallel as the handover across the retail division is managed in an orderly manner.
