Amazon Australia added Afterpay as a payment option at checkout on its website and mobile app from 3 September 2025, allowing customers to pay for eligible purchases in four instalments.

The option applied to physical products. Alcohol, digital content and subscriptions were excluded. The rollout came ahead of the Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas trading periods.

SECOND BNPL OPTION ON AMAZON AUSTRALIA

Afterpay joined Zip, which Amazon Australia signed up as a buy now, pay later provider in 2019. With the addition, Amazon became one of a number of large Australian online and physical retailers offering Afterpay, alongside eBay, Kogan, Kmart, Big W, Harvey Norman and The Iconic.

Afterpay, founded in Australia, has been owned by US payments company Block, formerly Square, since a takeover agreed in 2021. Supermarket chains remained largely absent from the list of Australian retailers offering buy now, pay later payments at the time of the Amazon launch.

NEW CREDIT RULES

The Amazon launch came about three months after Afterpay and other buy now, pay later providers were brought under Australian consumer credit laws for the first time in June 2025. Under the new rules, people signing up to Afterpay must provide information on their income and expenses, and the company may carry out credit checks that are visible to other credit providers.

Amazon's Asia-Pacific payments lead, Sujit Misra, said the change was intended to make shopping more flexible for customers, while Afterpay executive Katrina Konstas said the partnership would let shoppers access what they wanted when they wanted it.
