Block announced on 27 May 2025 that it will integrate bitcoin payments into its Square point-of-sale platform, enabling eligible merchants in the United States, excluding New York State, to accept bitcoin directly through the Square app they already use to process everyday transactions. The company unveiled the feature at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas.

The integration will use the Lightning Network, a second-layer settlement protocol built on top of bitcoin that processes payments near-instantly and at a fraction of the cost of base-layer bitcoin transactions.

ROLLOUT PLAN AND REGULATORY PATHWAY

Block set out a phased deployment schedule in its announcement. The feature is planned to begin rolling out to eligible Square sellers in the second half of 2025, with the company targeting full availability across all eligible sellers in 2026, subject to applicable regulatory approvals. The announcement said the feature is not expected to be available to sellers in New York State or outside the United States.

The company said the functionality will be embedded directly within Square's existing point-of-sale application rather than requiring merchants to adopt new hardware.
