J.P. Morgan Payments, the payments business of JPMorgan Chase, said on 27 May 2026 that it had deployed an AI-powered mail automation robot at one of its lockbox sites, automating the handling of cheques and remittance documents that operators previously processed manually.

The robots, developed with Silicon Valley-based document intelligence company Ripcord, open envelopes, remove and unfold the contents, separate pages, remove staples, track content and scan the documents. Powered by computer vision and AI models, they can handle more than 4,000 envelope and document permutations. The bank said the robot was deployed in 2025. Its lockbox operators handle roughly 480 million documents and cheques a year. J.P. Morgan Payments processed more than 130 million cheques in 2025.

LOCKBOX OPERATIONS

Under a lockbox service, payers send cheques and accompanying remittance documents to a secure address managed by the bank rather than to the recipient's office. The bank receives the mail, deposits the cheques and digitises the documents so that the client can reconcile payments.

“Lockbox remains a cornerstone of our client offerings,” said Michelle Conklin, Head of Receivables and Public Sector at J.P. Morgan Payments. “By investing in robotic and AI technology to improve our lockbox operations, we are automating the most labor-intensive tasks of the process, freeing our team to focus on more complex, higher-value decision making.”

EARLIER AUTOMATION

The bank said it rebuilt its lockbox processing platform in 2020 with an internally developed system that uses AI for data extraction, quality validation and review, and has since integrated large language models to automate complex review tasks. Data capture that previously required approximately 13 billion keystrokes a year is now largely automated, and processing accuracy has risen to more than 99.999%, it said. Lockbox employees also have an AI-powered assistant that provides real-time process information, and every model undergoes extensive testing before deployment, according to the bank.
